7 Unique Mattress Sizes

Which Mattress Size is Best for You?

You May Be Limited by Size of the Room

You’ve probably heard something about mattress sizes and how a full size mattress is much smaller than a king size bed but still bigger than a twin sized mattress. But it is important to know the specific differences between mattress sizes when shopping for a new one. Typically, mattress sizes range from twin to king, however, this article also addresses some less common mattress sizes.

King Size Mattress (76 x 80 inches)

If space and price are no obstacles, then you may prefer a king size mattress over a queen. With 16 extra inches of width, the king mattress means a couple can sleep comfortably together without any concerns about space. The king size mattress is quite big and therefore requires a large amount of space to be practical.

California King Size Mattress (72 x 84 inches)

The California king mattress is a different take on the king size mattress. While slightly narrower, those inches are tacked on to the mattress length. The slightly narrower mattress won’t have a significant impact for most couples, but the increase in length could be a major benefit for very tall sleepers.

Queen Size Mattress (60 x 80 inches)

The queen size mattress is probably the best option for most couples. Its width and length make it large enough for almost all couples to sleep comfortably. While large enough to fit two sleepers, the queen mattress is still small enough to fit in apartments or smaller rooms.

Full Size Mattress (54 x 75 inches)

The full size mattress is the most ideal sized bed space for a single sleeper. It is a significant upgrade over the twin XL and is certainly a better choice when space allows. While a full size mattress is the smallest size that can realistically accommodate two sleepers, it is not ideal for a couple given its 27 inches per person of width.

Twin XL Size Mattress (39 x 80 inches)

While just as wide as the regular twin, the twin XL mattress is long enough to be comfortable for the tallest adults, without taking up too much unnecessary room for one person. Their compact size makes them quite popular for college dormitories and very small living spaces.

Twin Size Mattress (39 x 75 inches)

Twin size mattresses are the most common mattresses for children. At 75 inches long, this size should be more than adequate for most young children through their teenage years. Their size makes them as portable as they can be without being too small for older children.

Crib Size Mattress (27 x 52 inches)

At just 27 by 52 inches, the crib sized bed is very clearly meant for babies or toddlers. This size of mattress should fit most cribs in the United States.

Summary

It’s clear that there is a wide range of mattress sizes. Despite the large range, each size has a very clear purpose and this list should help you find exactly what you are looking for! Are you ready to buy a mattress?
